INTRODUCTION: On October 7, 2005 a collection of James Madison University students from Dr. St. John’s Oceanography class went on a fieldtrip to Whachapreague, Virginia on the Eastern Shore. As an innovative and hands on approach to learning about the biological and geological importance of the estuaries we collected data from three sites (shown on the map below) and analyzed the obtained specimens in the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) laboratory that is associated with William and Mary University. Specialists at VIMS took us to the sites and guided us in our learning process. Constrained by an approaching tropical storm, we diligently worked together to obtain accurate data as quickly as possible.
