At the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) lab we were able to identify the specimens from each of the three sites by making observations using microscopes. I was surprised at the immense variety and quantity of microscopic life that exists on the shells, rocks, sea plants, and other objects that have collected on the sea floor. Marine biology specialists who work with VIMS helped us identify each of our specimens using field guides and other resources. |
