Northwest to southeast cross section through the Valley and Ridge, Blue Ridge and part of the Piedmont provinces in northern Virginia. Note that the piedmont and Blue Ridge "basement" rocks have been transported westward along a thrust fault, and that Cambrian and early Ordovician divergent continental margin sediments lie under these provinces.
Also, the block labeled "Blue Ridge Overthrust" is not a uniform block. It contains numerous thrust faults so that virtually every piece has been transported from it site of origin. Clicking the work "Piedmont" will take you to a map showing the belts that make it up.
