James Madison University is situated in the Shenandoah Valley which is rich in Paleozoic age carbonate and clastic stratigraphy with spectacular fold and fault sequences. To the west of the university are the folded clastics of the Appalachian Mountains. |

Also of geologic interest in the area are Luray, Endless, Grand, and Shenandoah caverns. Also, Massanutten Mountain, Natural Chimneys, Natural Bridge and the Skyline Drive which runs along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains. |
