Field Geology Program

Field Camp Pic James Madison University has conducted a full-scale Summer Field Geology Program since 1978. More than 500 geology majors from 60 different colleges and universities around the country have graduated from this program. Each of these students bring with them a diversity of background and training that has provided a great learning experience for all participants.

Field Camp Pic In 1984 the Summer Geology Field Program at JMU was awarded a grant through the Virginia Funds for Excellence program. This grant provided funds for surveying, drafting, field, and communications equipment for the program.

Field Camp Pic Field Camp Pic The success of the Geology Field Program (which was specifically mentioned in the 1995 Fisk College Guide) is in part due to our proximity to diverse geologic terraine, well developed geologic structures, and abundant rock exposure. To the east of campus are the Precambrian and Cambrian age metavolcanics and metaclastics of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

James Madison University is situated in the Shenandoah Valley which is rich in Paleozoic age carbonate and clastic stratigraphy with spectacular fold and fault sequences. To the west of the university are the folded clastics of the Appalachian Mountains.

Also of geologic interest in the area are Luray, Endless, Grand, and Shenandoah caverns. Also, Massanutten Mountain, Natural Chimneys, Natural Bridge and the Skyline Drive which runs along the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
