These are typical corundum crystals in various views. In a metamorphic rock (schists typically) they appear as brown, prismatic crystals. However, they also form in igneous rocks, and in pegmatites and hornfels.
White, gray, brown, black, deep red (ruby), blue (sapphire); Hardness 9; no cleavage; hexagonal, sometimes tapering crystals.
