Hardness: 3.5-4
Cleavage: Perfect in three directions, forming a rhombohedron
Fracture: Uneven, brittle
Crystals: Hexagonal; most often in rhombohedrons, also cleavage masses, granular, compact, botryoidal, incrusting; distinct crystals uncommon
